  1. 100 Days of Preschool

    April 2, 2024

Friday, March 22nd was Belgrade Central’s 100th day of preschool! These young students don’t go to school on Mondays, so their number of school days are different from the rest of the grade levels. The children loved celebrating their 100th day of learning! Students were encouraged to bring in 100 items that could fit in a gallon sized Ziplock bag. They had collections of 100 pennies, paperclips, beads, Pez candies, paper butterflies, pom poms, M&Ms, cereal, and even cupcake liners! Students compared which collection of 100 items would weigh more using balance beams to check their predictions. All of their stations on this special day included 100 items such as 100 dinosaurs, 100 unifix cubes, 100 legos, and 100 stamps. The children’s favorite station was stacking 100 cups! They all tried to make the biggest tower possible. Mr. Clark even participated! The students created crowns that they proudly wore throughout the school. They also read a 100 Day book and poem as well as incorporated 100 Day fitness fun! At the end of the day, everyone had some amazing trail mix that the parents generously donated. It was a fun day for Belgrade Central’s amazing PreK program! #WeAreRSU18

  2. Nonfiction March Madness

    March 22, 2024

Nonfiction March Madness is in full swing at Belgrade Central School! The Dean of Students, Mrs. Moody, has organized the event for years at Williams Elementary School, but the BCS staff was excited to expand this tradition to students in grades PreK-5! BCS is loving the fun book pairings and fascinating topics that are included in their bracket this year! Not only have staff facilitated incredible conversations, but they have also extended the learning into other content areas. Teachers have connected the voting for book pairings into math class and organizing data. Mrs. Hansen’s class even made ice cream after reading the book The Ice Cream Man. They have loved their first round of “Book Battles” and can’t wait to see which contenders move onto the Elite 8 next week! Stay tuned! #WeAreRSU18

  3. The Iditarod 2024

    March 12, 2024

Belgrade fourth graders are immersing themselves in learning about the Iditarod through reading, writing, and hallway decoration! They are learning about the race itself, the racers involved, Alaskan landforms, and all sorts of other intriguing information about the famous sled dog event! Students are loving it and have selected their favorite competitors! Shoutout to Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Holinger for creating a wonderful, immersive learning opportunity for their students! #WeAreRSU18

  4. Gardening at BCS

    February 13, 2024

This year, Belgrade Central School was approved for a grant that brought raised beds, lights, and seeds to their building! Students, led by teachers and a local volunteer farmer, have begun planting and growing vegetables and herbs! They will use these raised beds to learn about plant life cycles, self sustaining farming, and all the other amazing components of farming! BCS is hoping for a great crop! #WeAreRSU18

  5. Student Council

    January 30, 2024

Belgrade Central School recently started a Student Council organized and led by Wendy Randall and Meredyth Browning. Students in third through fifth grade were invited to complete an application explaining why they wanted to be part of the group. The school was excited to receive more than 40 applications from students interested in being leaders in the building! At this time, fourteen students with big ideas on how to make BCS a better place to grow and learn were selected to represent all of the third through fifth grade classrooms. Their first project was a huge success! They organized a collection of more than 200 Christmas cards to deliver to patients at a local nursing home and rehabilitation center to brighten their holiday! The group is highly motivated and engaged in planning many fun, school-wide community building activities! They are looking forward to sharing their Friendship Gram project in February! #WeAreRSU18

  6. “Reading” in the New Year

    January 19, 2024

Belgrade Central School is ringing in the New Year with lots of reading! On January 3, they kicked off a schoolwide Read-A-Thon. They set a goal of 10,000 minutes of reading at home and at school during the month of January. During the event, the entire school read poems for 5 minutes to earn the first 1,200 minutes of reading for the month! After 5 days, BCS students had already logged 11,000 minutes of reading at home and at school. The school already earned their goal of a sledding party with cocoa sponsored by the incredible PTO! They will now work to reach 40,000 for another prize! Students can also earn books in a raffle for their reading dedication! There are even more surprises in store for Belgrade readers! #WeAreRSU18

  7. Folktale Performance

    January 12, 2024

As part of a folktale unit of study, Belgrade Central School students practiced and performed three short plays for a standing room only audience. Learners managed the whole play themselves from start to finish! A special thank you to the parents who provided the extra support at home to help the students learn their parts! #WeAreRSU18

  8. Studying Chambers of the Heart

    January 9, 2024

Mrs. Murray returned to Mrs. Bean’s fifth grade classroom at Belgrade Central School. This time she cut up deer hearts and lungs, and the students studied closely the chambers of the heart – where the lungs, esophagus, and trachea are. They looked at major vessels in the heart and had a fantastic time! Thank you, Mrs. Murray! #WeAreRSU18

  9. World Kindness Day

    January 5, 2024

The “S” in BCS stands for Spread Kindness! In honor of World Kindness Day, the school collected just over 300 items for the Belgrade/Rome food pantry in an effort to spread kindness in the local community. BCS students and staff wore superhero shirts to honor friends, parents, athletes, and fictional superheroes on the special day! They collected $245 in donations to support the Superhero patients at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Center! #WeAreRSU18

  10. Popcorn Science

    January 2, 2024

Kindergarteners in Mrs. Potts and Ms. A’s classes at Belgrade Central recently gathered as scientists to investigate the question: How does popcorn pop? Mrs. Potts shared the book, The Popcorn Book, with both classes as students brainstormed a hypothesis for the prompt, “What will happen to a popcorn kernel when it goes into oil?” Curious learners were so excited to test and observe the results of the investigation! You can imagine the excitement when popcorn leaped out of the pan with hot oil! This fun experiment ended with a sampling of various popcorn flavors to determine the students’ favorite popcorn toppings: butter, cheddar, or caramel! #WeAreRSU18
