Author Lynn Plourde Visits BCS

For as long as I have worked at the Belgrade Central School, the students and staff have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to see a famous author or illustrator every year thanks to the support and generosity of the Stevens Fund. Alternating every other year between the upper and lower elementary groups, the library has been able to arrange one author visit each year.

We all know that this type of experience is invaluable for students in creating a culture of reading and building connections with literature, but it still came as a surprise when the Stevens Fund committee opted to increase the amount of funding. For the past two years, the Library has had the great pleasure of planning for and hosting an author and/or illustrator for both the Pk-2 and 3-5 students. This significant increase in funding and support to ensure all students are able to have an author visit every year is rare and wonderful.

On November 1, 2018, Maine author Lynn Plourde came and presented to the students in grades 3-5 on her newest and only middle-grade novel Maxi’s Secrets. Students and staff alike were engaged in her interactive presentations as they listened to the author read from her book, participated in sign language activities, and were encouraged to broaden their view of the world with activities that challenged them to use senses other than sight.  Six lucky recipients of the school’s Eagle and Student of the Month awards were invited down to the library to have a pizza lunch with Lynn. A good time was had by all.

We look forward to our visit with Maine author and illustrator Kevin Hawkes in April for the PK-2 students.

Happy Reading!

Kate Bailey
