  1. Destination Mars

    May 30, 2023

Fourth and fifth grade students at Belgrade Central School recently participated in a virtual field trip called “Destination Mars.” The missions were run by staff members from the Challenger Learning Center of Maine, located in Bangor. Belgrade Central School qualified for this learning opportunity through a NASA CAAT Grant. The interactive, one hour, live virtual field trips required students to work in four teams (Conditions, Geology, Navigation, and Rover) to identify which one of the Red Planet’s moons, Deimos or Phobos, to build a base on. Student teams selected which moon was best by analyzing three sets of data collected by rovers on Deimos and Phobos. The goal was to send a spacecraft to the surface of Mars and back in the fastest and safest way possible. It was a memorable and engaging learning experience for all! #WeAreRSU18

  2. Popcorn + Poetry Celebration

    May 22, 2023

Belgrade Central School’s fifth graders ended poetry month with a popcorn and poetry celebration! Students spent the month of April exploring a variety of poetry and studying figurative language. They put their creative minds to work and wrote their very own poetry anthologies. Families were invited into the classroom to enjoy popcorn and hear students read aloud a poem they had published. Around 60 family members and friends joined these young learners for this celebration! #WeAreRSU18

  3. Belgrade Central School Performs “Hansel and Gretel”

    March 16, 2023

By: Laura Dunbar, Grade 2 Belgrade Central School

The Missoula Children’s Theatre, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 40 years now from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 teams of Tour Actors/ Directors.

Belgrade Central School welcomes Missoula Children’s Theatre with open arms each year during the month of March. Students who are interested in being involved in the play pre-register for auditions. There are many avenues for students to become involved with Missoula, not just acting in the play. This year we had three students assisting backstage in the role of assistant director. Students will often help on the day of the shows, passing out programs and holding the doors.

On Monday, the tour team arrived with a set, lights, costumes, and props, everything it takes to put on a play… except the cast. The team held an audition and this year cast 50 students to perform in the production of Hansel and Gretel. The show was rehearsed throughout the week– yes, you read that correctly, just five days of rehearsals! Many students stayed at school until 7 p.m. each night rehearsing. Two performances were presented to the public on Saturday, March 11th. The show, Hansel and Gretel was a Missoula Children’s Theatre original adaptation with a twist on the classic story that you know and love.

Also, as a part of their residency, enrichment workshops were presented by the Tour Actor/ Directors. Each grade level at BCS participatd in workshops such as Improv, Acting, and Behind the Scenes. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills, and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through participation in this unique, educational project.

Funding for the Missoula Children’s Theatre is made possible by a group of parents and teachers, called the Belgrade Central School Theater Committee. The committee raises money through donations, raffles, and show ticket sales. Sponsors this year included Belgrade Central School PTO, The Don C. Stevens Fund, P & B Remodeling, Hammond Lumber, and Eco Guard.

A lot of energy and hard work goes into that one week in March, but the smiles, singing, and pride during that final song on stage is priceless. Stay tuned to find out what show BCS will be putting on next year! #WeAreRSU18

A new club has started at Belgrade Central School – the BCS Book Buddies! Over the last three weeks, BCS Book Buddies has met after school twice a week to read and discuss the book Odder by Katherine Applegate. In addition to reading the book, students have spent time watching the live otter cam, reading non-fiction books about otters, crafting, and learning all about sea otters such as their diet, their dynamic kelp forest habitat, and about the incredible sea otter rehabilitation program at The Monterey Bay Aquarium. Students will wrap up their first book next week with an “otterly” spectacular celebration! #WeAreRSU18

  6. Scientific Writing

    January 10, 2023

By: Laura Dunbar, Second Grade Teacher, Belgrade Central School

The second grade students at Belgrade Central School have been learning about how scientists write. The children learned that scientists ask a question about how the world works. Each child then came up with their own question involving force and motion. Next, students recorded a hypothesis for their question. They then learned to design an experiment to test their hypothesis and recorded their procedure. The second graders learned the importance of writing the details of each step, and also how to include drawings and labels to help other people recreate their experiment. After that, they conducted multiple trials and recorded their data. Finally, the results were analyzed and a conclusion was written. Learning about this new type of writing was challenging and fun! #WeAreRSU18
