Sarah Thomson Visits BCS
Maine author, Sarah Thomson, joined Belgrade Central School and spent the day in the library meeting with each grade level! They learned about her writing and her profession. What a great opportunity for students to meet an author and learn more about the art of writing and reading! Though she writes poetry, picture books, and novels, Thomson shared with students the steps she uses to create nonfiction books. Beginning with research, she discussed the progression through the writing process of selection and organization, writing, revising (up to 20 drafts), and illustration. Sarah described the writing process for her book Save the Frogs. Students had many questions – asking her how many books she has written, how she writes a book, who takes pictures for her nonfiction books, and what her favorite book is that she has written. She said picking out her favorite book is like picking your favorite child, impossible to do because they all offer something different and she has a connection with all of them. Thomson shared it took her as long as 13 years to write one book, but the process can be as short as 3-4 months. Students even suggested other nonfiction topics they would like to see Sarah write about. Thomson described them as enthusiastic nonfiction writers. #WeAreRSU18
